Books for children who are grieving
In times of grief and loss, it can be hard to know how to talk to our kids and offer them the comfort they need. These five books provide hope and reassurance about Christ's love, even in the midst of great loss, helping kids navigate grief while embracing the hope of eternity! I recommend these books for children ages 4-8.
The moon is always round
by Jonathan Gibson
This book uses the imagery of the moon to explain how God's goodness is always present, even when it might be hard to see. In the back of the book, there is further biblical help for Christian parents to explain God’s goodness to children, even in grief. Note: This book is based on the true story of the author's stillborn daughter and would be especially meaningful for a sibling who is going through the same kind of loss.
Goodbye to Goodbyes
by Lauren Chandler
Jesus knew how scary it is when someone gets sick, and He knew how sad it is when someone dies. Jesus wept when his friend, Lazarus, died. But something that Jesus did at His friend's tomb changed everything. He showed that He came to give His friends life after death. This book helps children understand Jesus' sovereignty over death and that all who believe in Him will rise one day, just as Lazarus did.
Someone I Love Died
by Christine Harder Tangvald
This comforting book acts as a journal and helps children navigate the grief of losing a loved one. It uses gentle language and biblical truths and answers many questions that young children might have about death and dying.
SOMETHING SAD HAPPENED
by Darby A. Strickland
In this story, Sunny the Bluebird struggles with losing her friend Wren and feels sad and unable to sing. With the help of her Mama and forest friends, Sunny learns to share her feelings and find comfort in God’s love. In the back, there is a helpful section for parents and caregivers that guides them in helping children express their sorrow and remember their loved ones.
THE ROYAL IN YOU
by Jordan Raynor
While none of us know exactly what Heaven will be like, this book would encourage children who are scared of eternity in Heaven. It helps explain that Heaven is tangible and that Jesus will make a new Heaven and a new Earth and will come to be with His people. It is beautifully illustrated and theologically rich!
