My Morning Matcha Latte Routine
Every morning (and most afternoons), I make myself a small matcha latte. It has become a daily rhythm I really look forward to, and it calms me before a busy day.
For years, I had avoided caffeine completely because drinking coffee or black tea made me jittery and anxious, but finding matcha was a game-changer! The caffeine in matcha is released more slowly, giving me sustained energy and mental clarity and then gradually tapering off. I never feel jittery, just calmly energized and focused.
Here are some other health benefits from drinking matcha:
🍵 May help lower blood pressure and cholesterol
🍵 May help reduce inflammation
🍵 May help boost metabolism
🍵 May help decrease stress and anxiety (it has for me!)
Here’s my basic routine:
- Sift 1/2 to 1 tsp ceremonial matcha powder into a small bowl.*
- Add a few tablespoons of hot—but not boiling—water.
- Use a matcha whisk (called a chasen) and whisk back and forth and side to side until there are no clumps and the matcha is frothy at the top.
- Warm and froth 1/2 cup of your favorite milk or creamer. I love using raw milk (which doesn’t froth well, but tastes delicious) or unsweetened vanilla Nutpods.
- Optional: Add a teaspoon of sweetener before adding the milk.
- Pour the frothed milk over the matcha mixture and enjoy!
*I learned the hard way that purchasing quality matcha powder—ceremonial, NOT culinary—is so worth it! High-quality matcha powders do not taste bitter.
