Our First Aid Travel Kit

I'll be the first to admit that I haven't always been the most prepared mom.

But after 12 years of motherhood, I've learned (the hard way, perhaps) that packing a few essentials—especially when it comes to my kids' health—has made a big difference when we travel.

Our family is traveling quite a bit this summer, including several long road trips with kids. I want to share the first aid bag I carry with us everywhere! The products I choose contain the most natural ingredients possible without sacrificing effectiveness, and these are what I give my kids. (As a side note, I am a registered nurse and prefer to use natural remedies when possible.) Of course, your family's needs may differ, but I hope this gives you some helpful ideas.

  • Welly bandages: You can never have enough bandages for minor scrapes and cuts! And these stay on well!
  • Antiseptic Cleansing Foam: I use this on my kids' scrapes before applying a bandage (if one is needed), and I love that this doesn't sting. It works for adults, too!
  • Hydrocortisone Cream with Calendula: This cream has natural ingredients and helps prevent itching from cuts, scrapes, and bug bites.
  • Genexa Acetaminophen: We don't give our kids much Tylenol, but I am thankful for this dye-free option if they absolutely need it (like bringing down a high fever).
  • Motion sickness patches: My kids and I both deal with car sickness, and these have really helped! You place them either behind the ear or over the belly button, and they are safe for both kids and adults.
  • Motion sickness chewables: These really do help if we're feeling car sick, and they don't cause drowsiness.
  • Instant thermometer: If anyone spikes a fever, I like to know what kind of fever we're dealing with. My general recommendation is to treat the child, not just the number. For instance, if your child has a low-grade fever but feels miserable or can't sleep, it might be worth administering medication. However, if they have a higher fever but aren't too uncomfortable, I believe in letting the fever run its course to fight the virus without unnecessary medication.
  • Activated charcoal: If we have any food poisoning while traveling, or even just basic stomach upset, activated charcoal can be super helpful!
  • Genexa Kids' Allergy: This is liquid diphenhydramine (an antihistamine for allergic reactions) for ages 6 and up. I appreciate that Genexa is dye-free and has no artificial additives. I especially love knowing that if my kids have an allergic reaction to a new food, we can administer this right away before receiving medical attention.
  • Alcohol prep pads: I like to keep a handful of these for cleaning the thermometer and minor wounds.
  • Zippered pill pouches: These allow me to bring just a few specific vitamins or medications instead of the entire bottle. I use a Sharpie to label them.
  • Sleepy Time from Earthley: I bring this to help all of us sleep well while we travel!
  • Finally, here's the makeup bag I use to store it all.
  • I also keep this simple first aid kit in our glove compartment at all times. It is super compact and would be perfect to add to your purse or diaper bag, so you're always prepared! It even includes a tick remover, a small sewing kit, and more. If we run out of bandages in our travel first aid kit, I know we have back up.
