Independence Day Picture Books
As our nation prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, there's no better way to share history with your children than through beautiful books. The following picture books bring American history to life through engaging stories and illustrations and offer age-appropriate introductions to the people and events that shaped our nation.
I've listed these books in roughly chronological order, making it easy to read through the story of America's founding.

The Boston Tea Party
by Russell Freedman (ages 7-10)
A beautifully illustrated account of the famous protest that helped start the American Revolution and set America on the path toward independence. This book sets the stage for the events leading up to Independence Day.
The Fourth of July Story*
by Alice Dalgliesh (ages 5-9)
A classic introduction to the events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, told in a clear and engaging way. If you can only read one book this Independence Day, this is a great choice that covers a lot of ground!

The Star-Spangled Banner

A visually stunning presentation of America's national anthem, complete with the story behind its creation during the War of 1812. This really makes the national anthem come alive, and shares the history of the song at the end of the book.
Blue Sky, White Stars
by Sarvinder Naberhaus (ages 4–8)
A poetic celebration of the American flag and the diverse people, places, and stories it represents. This one is a short read, but an excellent conversation starter!
This Land Is Your Land
by Woody Guthrie, illustrated by Kathy Jakobsen (ages 4–8)
